Finding Hope Beyond Shame and Guilt

Finding Hope Beyond Shame and Guilt

Shame and guilt are uncomfortable feelings that everyone has experienced at some point in their life. Although these words are sometimes used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings. Guilt is an uneasy feeling that arises when we have engaged in behaviors we recognize as problematic. Though guilt can be uncomfortable, it can help us seek out ways to grow and change.

In 12-step programs, the first step is admitting that one has a problem. By acknowledging that something is problematic, we can take the steps to overcome our challenges. In contrast, shame is rooted in identity. Shame is a misperception that tells us that we are our challenge or problematic behavior.

Guilt can empower us to seek deeper dependence on God, mentorship from a pastor or trusted church member, and/or counsel from a trained physician or mental health professional. Conversely, shame can tell us negative and/or inaccurate messages about ourselves. These messages or thoughts can lead us to believe that we are the only person who has our given challenge or problem. These misconceptions can prevent us from reaching out to those who are trained to help.

A step towards combating shame is to replace those negative messages with truths we know about ourselves. The scriptures teach that all people are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). As God’s image bearers, we have innate value, worth, and nobility (Psalm 8:4-8). As Christians, we are forgiven by the work of Christ on the cross and have an eternal inheritance (Hebrews 9:15).

By reflecting on God’s word and on what we know to be true about ourselves, we can begin to reclaim who we are in Christ in light of our problematic behaviors and/or challenges. If you are currently struggling with shame or guilt, know that you are not alone. God is faithful and provides a way for us to endure life’s challenges (1 Corinthians 10:13).

At Mosaic Wholeness Center, we are here to support you on your journey. By utilizing science-based practices, biblical insight, and Christian compassion, our counselors foster an environment of growth and change.
